NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Jan. 19, 2026) – Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office officials are investigating another scam that’s circulating after a Uhrichsville woman reported losing thousands of dollars to a fraudster posing as a well‑known prize organization.

According to call records, she contacted authorities Saturday morning to say she had been scammed.

The victim told deputies she was contacted by an unknown individual claiming to be with Publishers Clearing House. Believing the claim, the woman purchased approximately $3,500 in gift cards and provided the card numbers to the individual. Sheriff’s officials have repeatedly advised the public never to share gift card numbers, as legitimate organizations do not request payment in that form.

The woman said she did not provide any personal information to the suspect.

Deputies say the incident remains under investigation and there are no clear suspects currently.

Sheriff’s officials have urged residents to remain alert for scams and to report suspicious calls or messages as soon as possible.
